O, Ophelia captivated with a fresh perspective

On 27 March 2025, the Wintergarden Theatre came alive for the first time since it closed in 1968 with the sold-out performance of O, Ophelia.

Presented to a packed house, this bold reimagining of Shakespeare’s Hamlet placed Ophelia’s story at the centre, offering a fresh perspective on one of literature’s most haunting figures.

The production featured a talented local chorus supported by regional director Cheryl Ratcliffe, with standout performances by Stella Hutchins, Eva McGrail, and Brigette McMahon. Their work, combined with the touring ensemble cast, gave audiences a powerful evening of theatre that blended professional artistry with community engagement.

Audience surveys reflected how deeply the production resonated. Comments praised the performances as “powerfully acted and presented” and “very well done — the local performers were brilliant.” Many noted how special it was to be part of the historic reopening of the venue, describing the experience as both confronting and thought-provoking.

O, Ophelia was presented through JUTE Theatre Company’s DARTS (Driving and Activating the Regional Theatre Sector) program, which brings high-quality, professional productions into regional Queensland while building capacity for local artists. The program enables communities to not only experience theatre of national standard but also to participate in the creative process through casting, workshops, and local collaborations.

By combining professional talent with regional voices, O, Ophelia honoured the Wintergarden Theatre’s heritage while signalling a vibrant new chapter in Bundaberg’s cultural life.
